Sandcastles

All that I build
On the shore,
They don’t hold
For waves come crashing;
I don’t mind
For they wash my feet,
Preach to be bold
And tell me
How the water is cold.
They teach me how
Nothing would hold,
By smashing my castles
And soaking my coat,
Train me to try again
And again if again fails.
Praise my work,
Wet my brush
And slap me
When I drown
To wake me up
From my slumber.
They confide in me
Of a storm
That forms
At the edge of the sea
“It is coming
One day
To take away
Everything you hold dear,
You hold near
To your heart,
Everything you thought
Would last
Everything you believe
Would be the last
To leave
Would be the first to go.
It will not see
What you have built,
Will not care
What was there
In your loamy sand,
Splish splash!
Go run away
To a safer land,
I will still be here
For I am a promise keeper.”

Yet here I am,
Still on the shore,
All I know
Is how to build
Sandcastles.
