Ordinary Man

Ordinary man,
Go back to your ordinary life!
Did you eat today?
Did you sleep as much
As you did yesterday?
Did you say those words,
You said so many times,
You forgot what it means now?
Did you breathe enough,
So much that you took life for granted?
Did you play a game to pass time,
So that somewhere down the line
You run into a tomorrow quickly,
Relieved to see the cycle repeat?
Did you switch on the TV,
When you felt clueless about life?
Then stared at the screen for too long?
Did you run out of things to do?
Called your wretched friend too?
Who was as weary as you,
And you went out to discuss things
You would forget tomorrow.
Small talk –
About the weather,
About the dinner,
About a movie,
About your favourite team,
And politics,
Takes you away from the deep,
You like shallow for the fear of drowning.
Were you on the internet?
Watching cat videos,
Or better lives
Scroll past your sleepy eyes.
Add up all your words you ever spoke,
You have talked so much your entire life,
Did you ever make a difference?
Sleep, knowing there are more pointless talks in you,
They are going to add up to mean nothing too.
Did you sprawl on the sofa like you were born for it?
And waited for someone to fetch your clothes?
Did you joke about how pathetic your life is?
Then hoped people to laugh at your misery,
Secretly hiding your insecurities.
Did you clean up your mess,
Waiting for it to get dirty again?
Or repeat a chore to put on a show,
Tickets to which no one buys.
Did you not just pray with a curse?
Or thought a million thoughts,
When your attention was sought.
Did you walk down the same road for groceries?
Did you not have what you had yesterday?
Or the day before?
Or the day before all yesterdays?
Did you greet the person you hate?
Or longed for another mate?
Hoping it would all get over,
Waited for it to get over.
Did you just waste a kiss
When your heart wasn’t in it?
And write a poem,
Only to see it rhyme?
Did you drink to forget time,
Or to be reminded of it?
Did you run because you were fat?
And stayed because of responsibilities?
Did you make a family
For the world to watch?
And swam in the same pool
Where they wash.
You got out of bed only to sleep again –
You moved so much and you got nowhere.
You move so much, you do not move,
While lives wait with begging toys
To get a piece of your countless trifles.
It’s alright, common man!
Go on!
Wallow in your bed,
Thrive in repose,
You sleep!
Let the extraordinary work.
